I personally love the fact that Valentine's is just one more day you get to say "I love you" and show your special someone how much you care. A year ago, we made the trip across the pond to Scotland for Brandon and Nicole's wedding. I had an amazing time and I was thrilled when she wanted to do a fall anniversary session. We traveled to their hometown of Grass Lake, Michigan for a country inspired photo shoot. We were surrounded by natural beauty and so much inspiration. Here are some of my favorites from that day:

I got the opportunity to photograph the Mills family this last weekend in Mishawaka, Indiana. Laurie had seen Nathan Barbott's senior portrait session that I photographed last year and knew that when it was Nick's turn, that we would be a good fit. We had a lot of fun at the Japanese gardens. We did some family photos and then I spent time with Nick for his senior portraits. What a great day for it!

His sister, Katie is so pretty! I hope she calls me when she's a senior.

Shaun is a Senior at Saint Joseph High School. He enjoys playing WWII games and has an interest in insects. Like any teenage boy, he was very camera shy at first. But after a while he started to relax and we got some great photographs in a beautiful park in Saint Joseph, MI. The weather was amazing for October, and the leaves were just starting to turn. A perfect day in the park!

This past weekend I traveled up to Mount Pleasant, MI to do an engagement session for Josh and Lisa. The weather was gorgeous and we got a lot of fun shots. Josh and Lisa were engaged in an antique pink Mustang. (I know, right?) So of course we had to get pictures with the car where the journey started. But before that, we started out the session by taking pictures in the lab where they met on CMU's campus!

While we were strolling through the park, we saw a woodchuck. I had to grab a quick shot. He didn't seem to mind us, but was not amused when I asked him how much wood he could chuck.

Here's their adorable dog, Cole. What a good puppy!

And then to the beautiful 'Stang!

He told her that they were going to look at a pink Mustang because he wanted to buy it. She thought this was quite rediculous, but went along with it. Luckily she did, because while they were in the front seat, he popped the question!

Steve and Katie are really good friends of mine and I was SO excited when Steve popped the question in May. These two are so fun-loving! We had so much fun walking around Saint Joseph, Michigan, where Steve and Katie currently live. Here are a few of my favorites from their engagement session.

Shergo and Debbi traveled all the way from Las Vegas to get married on blue lake at Shergo's parents lake cottage in Mecosta, MI. We could not have had more beautiful weather. They were so easy going and happy the entire day.

I asked them if they would like to participate in a ground-breaking experimental technique called a cinemagraph, and they were more than happy to try it out. So behold, I unveil my very first cinemagraph ever below. What is a cinemagraph you ask? Why just look closely at the image below and you should see that some parts are not quite as still as the photograph would seem.

Not only do theses babies look good on the web, think about how they would look in your house. That's right, with the technology of digital picture frames, you could have a picture that looks like a still photo until you take a second look. At this point almost everyone I talk to says, "It's just like Harry Potter!".

"Another Day in the Dress" sessions allow you to wear that dress one more time and have a chance to capture more relaxed images of you and your spouse. Mark and Kary are a very sweet down to earth couple. They had a very cute organic and earthy wedding overlooking the water in Elberta, Michigan at the Life Saving Station. It was the perfect venue with lots of history and a ton of charm. They had a morning wedding and a brunch reception. The food was simple, but delicious, and all or most of it local. I would VERY highly recommend Grand View Catering to anyone getting married in upper lower Michigan. They were phenominal!

I loved this idea: They had champagne and vodka available to add to freshly squeezed orange juice and spicy tomato juice to make your own mimosas and blood mary's!

Lucille Evelynn : Newborn Photography

Last week I got to photograph a newborn baby girl for the first time in a while. This cute little darling was so sweet, and also very awake. The little peanut stayed awake the entire two hour session. She even had two feedings, but was much more interested in what was going on than sleeping. That means I got a lot of really cute photographs with her eyes open, but I wasn't able to pose her in those cute sleeping baby poses. I tried to put her in the "baby bowl" and she showed me who was boss!

Lindsay + Michael : Engaged!

Lindsay is a dear friend from mine from high school. I was thrilled when she contacted me after all of these years to photograph her wedding. Lindsay and Michael currently reside in California, and were great troopers when it came time to shoot their engagement session with our crazy Michigan weather. They were such a joy to work with. They are truly thrilled to be with each other, and it shows. I can't wait to photograph their wedding in July!

Brandon + Nicole's Wedding Album

Brandon and Nicole love art, so they decided to upgrade the wedding album that came with their photography package. They opted for a larger 12x12 version with 40 pages. It was so much fun laying it out and I love how great it looks printed! I took some photos of it so I could show you what a flush mount album really looks like.

Each page is mounted to thick art board. The book lays completely flat when opened.

Brandon + Nicole 10.10.10 Edinburgh, Scotland

After two years of planning (on my part) I finally got to go with Nicole and Brandon to Edinburgh, Scotland and photograph their wedding! It was quite a fairytale wedding. They were married in Edinburgh Castle and had a pub crawl reception.
I have a feeling that these two will be life-long clients of mine, and that is fine by me. (Check out their engagement post here and here.) We had the BEST time seeing the town.

Here are just a few of my favorite shots from that amazing place in time. Honestly, there was not a bad shot in the whole city.

Nicole spent the night in my flat the night before the wedding. It was the first time I had to balance between getting ready and photographing the bride getting ready. It was fun to share her day with her right from the beginning.

I bought this hanger for Nicole for her birthday. It's her new last name. I got it from Lilafrances on Etsy. She does beautiful custom hangers. A great idea for bridal and baby showers!

Starting to get nervous:

They were married in St. Margaret's Chapel, which is the oldest and smallest chapel in Scotland. It only seats 22 guests, which is just how many she had. I loved shooting in there because I was literally standing ten feet away from the bride and groom.

And yes, the boys wore kilts!

I love the Scottish thistle and feathers:

This was the first time I had to tell the groom to watch how he sits.

After that amazing day we parted ways. Nicole and Brandon continued on to Greece for their honeymoon, and Doug and I headed to jump as many different countries as possible in the next 10 days. (Stay tuned for that post, I got some fantastic photographs!)

Sarah and Josh are from Michigan, but they now live in Seattle, Washington. Sarah moved to Seattle after completing her undergrad at Alma College to attend graduate school, and Josh went with her for support. Shortly after, they were engaged, and Sarah planned a beautiful wedding at the University Club of Michigan State University. It was a beautiful venue. Here are a few of my favorite photos from that day.

Her gorgeous flower arrangements were by Andrew's Garden Floral Couture.He did an amazing job. Easily some of the best flowers I've seen.

Sarah's mom made all of her glass flower centerpieces by hand. They were stunning!

Nicole + Brandon : Send off party!!

My friends Nicole and Brandon are becoming frequent flyers here on my blog, but I just love them!
Because they are getting married in Scotland in October, they wanted to celebrate with all their friends and family who couldn't be there. Instead of waiting for nicer weather after they return to have an at-home reception, they decided to have a send off party before they went! I think that is the neatest idea! It was at her dad's house in Grass Lake, Michigan, and was the perfect summer gathering.

Jonathan and Kelsey live in North Carolina, but made the long drive home to Grand Rapids, Michigan to have a wedding near Kelsey's hometown. We met at Gerald R. Ford Museum and got some amazing shots in one of the most beautiful spots in the city.

Another awesome thing about Kelsey is that she had a son seven years ago and made the decision to give him up for adoption. She chose to keep the adoption open and remains close with her son, Gavin, and his adoptive family. He was a Jr. Groomsman at her wedding! What an amazing way to share love!

Impromptu Ring Session

Nicole had shown me a photo a while back of a diamond ring on a pear. I was immediately drawn to the image and was thinking about how we had to do something like that with her rings when she gets married in Scotland in October. (Can't wait!)
Well... it just so happens that a friend of ours has a pear tree in her yard and picked some for us. I couldn't pass up the opportunity. So her and I went on a little walkabout today and got some great shots. I love spontaneous art!

Jay and Laura traveled all the way from their current town of Holly Springs, North Carolina to have their wedding in their home state of Michigan. The day was filled with friends, laughter, and the love of a family. They had a few bumps along the way, a few last minute changes, but Laura never lost her cool, and was smiling from ear to ear just about all day. In the end it was a fabulous occasion. Jim and Ashley were married in a private courthouse ceremony a year ago before they took the leap together and moved to Chicago. As they built their new lives together, they dreamed up a wedding to celebrate their union with their friends and family. Instead of a traditional ceremony, they had each member of their bridal party speak. It was a very touching ceremony. This couple has an amazing attitude and outlook on life and was a joy to photograph. It was an amazing day!

At the heart of Adam and Amber's relationship is an amazing family and great circle of friends. Adam is Joan Milius's brother, and their wonderful family asked me to photograph and capture his wedding day in Bridgman, Michigan.
I had such an amazing time with Amber throughout the whole day. Her bubbly personality is contagious and she never stopped laughing and smiling! It's was truly precious. She was a joy to photograph.

The.Cobb.Family 2009

This last weekend I got my friend Chrissy's family together for a beach shoot. This was the first family photo shoot for the Cobb family in a very long time, and it was such a blast! There was nothing they weren't willing to do to get a great shot. I had a great time photographing them on a nearly private beach down in Southwest Michigan at sunset.

I love Sophie the Miniature Dachshund. She was so cooperative.

My other e-session this weekend was for my good friends Nicole and Brandon. They got engaged all the way back in August 2007 when Brandon proposed to her in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris! Their wedding is planned for October 2010 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Nicole decided she wanted to get married in a castle in Scotland and is making it happen! I love the fact that they are having a very long engagement. It gives them the chance to take it easy and do things the way they want.
Nicole has a very artsy eye so when we got together, our brains just flew on what we could do. She picked out the wardrobe and did an excellent job, I must say. Check out these awesome photos in a laundromat!

We also did some by the lake and had a beautiful sunset!

Marci + Steve : Engaged!

This past weekend I did two e-sessions. One was for my BFF Marci and the love of her life, Steve. Marci and I lived together for 3 months before she took the leap and moved down to ATL to explore her relationship with Steve. A year later he pops the question! They wanted some quick headshots to announce their engagements in the local paper, so we headed out to Steve's parents house in Eau Claire, Michigan, to play among the vineyards. Steve was a good sport through my "artistic visions" throughout the session.

Nick and Dani 5.24.2009

This past Memorial Day Weekend, I was a guest at a forever friend's wedding. They got married at a campground in Carson City, Michigan, and it was the perfect day for it. The picnic reception was in a pavilion and the food was homemade and delicious! Here are a few snapshots I took:

Over the weekend, I had the privilege of going to Grand Haven, Michigan for a senior session for Scott DeWitt. I haven't been there in a couple of years, so it was nice to see what had changed and see what had been there since my childhood. It was a gorgeous, very bright, sunny day! It was a bit chilly with the wind, but Scott never complained. He was really relaxed and pretty easy to shoot. (And willing to do weird poses for me too!) We had an awesome time walking all over the pier and down the boardwalk! The whole family came for moral support and made it a family night! The kids had a great time running over the rocks and playing in the sand. Thanks for letting me take your portraits, Scott. Here are a few of my favorites:

The Holidays

Well, it's officially the "slow season" in the photography world. At least here in cold, wintery Michigan.I had the opportunity earlier this month to volunteer my services for the 126 Network Signal Company of the National Guard. A coworker of mine is the commander and was in charge of putting on a Christmas party for the soldiers and their families. I know it was a big job to undertake, and I was only too happy to volunteer for family portraits and portraits of the kids with Santa. I brought my photo printer with me and drove to Kalamazoo in the blowing snow to take portraits and print them as fast as I could. The families were very grateful to have Christmas portraits. It was a big turnout and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. The kids all got a bag full of gifts from Santa, and there were raffle prizes, bingo, and good food.

We adopted families at work, and I couldn't think of anything to give them. I'm very low on funds for the holiday season, and I couldn't justify giving to only one family and not the others. So I decided, why not donate myself? I wrote a letter to each family to offer free portrait sessions and I can't wait to hear from them. I really hope they enjoy it. This time of year is the giving season, and often we forget that it's not just the giving of material things, but the giving of oneself.

I had an impromptu family portrait session for the owner of where I work. He was in a jam and needed Christmas cards fast. So we went to the ice rink to do a few shots. It was so much fun shooting on the ice.

This last weekend I had an opportunity to shoot a friend of mine's children. I shot pictures of them for the last two years (well, just last year for the youngest). And watched those two grow up. They certainly are spirited boys. Here are a few of my favorites.

Aleene.Rinehart 2 Year Portraits

A few weeks ago I got a few minutes to take some 2 year photos of my niece, Aleene. She's a spitting image of me at that age, as well as her mother. We both wore the same dress for our two year portraits that she is wearing. Trying to get a two year old to hold still and not give you a silly grin is quite a feat. Here are my favorites.

A few weeks ago I got to attempt to get my nephew to hold still long enough for a formal portrait session. We were on vacation in the Wisconsin Dells, and the little guy is full of energy and very strong willed. He let me take formals for about a minute before he decided sitting was no fun. We changed him into play clothes and took him outside to enjoy the grass. He moved so fast I had to run to keep up! Here are a few cute ones.

Tonight I was able to shoot senior portraits of a friend of Joan Milius', Heather Moore. Heather had a great smile and warm personality, I really enjoyed taking her pictures on Wecko Beach in Bridgman, Michigan. We had a blast climbing all those stairs on the lookout points! Rae and Dan 8.16.2008

One of my best friends, Rae and her long, long, long time boyfriend Dan finally tied the knot last Saturday! (I say finally because they've been dating for seven years, when in reality, I think the timing was absolutely perfect.) I had the privilege to shoot their engagement photos back in June. We went to a private beach near Holland to capture the moment. It started to sprinkle just as we got there even though the sun was shining brightly. Here are some of my favorites from that day:

Fast forward to their wedding day! Since I was the maid of honor, I got to sit back and enjoy the wedding for once! They hired another close friend of mine, Chad, to take their wedding photos. Chad and his assistant Terry looked like they were having a good time with the wedding troupe. I brought my camera to take some getting ready shots and random things throughout the day.

This week I had the privilege of shooting senior pictures of a dear friend of mine's daughter. Joan is an amazingly beautiful young woman, and has a great photogenic smile. Every shot was a winner! They live on a cute little farm in Baroda, Michigan that had plenty of shooting areas to offer. We even shot some with Joan's horse! After a few shots at the homestead we headed down to Tiscornia Park for some great beach shots. Thank you so much, Joan, for letting me capture your Senior Portraits!

Well, I thought while I'm waiting to get a new website rolling, I could at least start a blog. So let's start with a little about me. My name is Sheena and I'm a photographer specializing in capturing artistic images in everyday life. I shoot weddings, portraits, events, babies, even nature. I have a BFA in Graphic Design with a Photography minor from Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. During college and for a while after, I shot for major wedding photographer located in Grand Rapids, Michigan for two and half years. During that time I really honed my skills and learned a lot as a photographer. Now I live in Saint Joseph, Michigan and have been enjoying the beach nearby as a wonderful shooting venue. I decided to start this blog to highlight the current jobs I have been working on.
